Greatness Of Temple: | |
The significance temple is in the Twin Shivalingas installed on the same Avudayar-peeta, hence revered as Irettayappan temple (Irattai-two). There are Nandhis and the Balipeeta before both Shivalingas. Sacred spring Thodukulam is behind the temple. The Linga installed by Sage Pooru is called Mahadevar. There is a shrine of Lord Arthanareeswara granting darshan to Sage Pooru. What is more significant is the presence of Mother Parvathi within the Shivalinga. The Linga is sculpted with extraordinary skill showing Mother Parvathi in the Linga explaining Shiva-Parvathi – Shiva Shakti philosophy. This is the only temple where devotees can have the darshan of this rare Shiva-Parvathi Linga and a Linga at a higher level.
Pooram festival is celebrated in this temple for the past 1,426 years. The popular Trissur Pooram is celebrated for the past 200 years only. |

Temple History: | |
Sage Pooru performed intense penance here, which once was dense forest. Pleased with his penance, Lord Shiva granted darshan to the sage in His Arthanareeswara form along with Mother Parvathi. Lord also gave the sage a Shivalinga and also created a spring for abishek to the Linga. The sage drew 3 lines with his fingers. As he touched (Thodudhal in Tamil) the earth and made a spring, hence this is called Thodukulam. Once, the sage left the Linga in the banyan tree for a bath but could not take it back when he returned. He made 24 steps, climbed and did his worship. After this event, 24 steps are made here to see and worship the presiding deity. The place named Pooru Vanam after the sage, later changed as Peruvanam. |
