 Greatness Of Temple:

On a Friday, following the Vaikasi new moon day, devotees make an idol of Amman
for worship.  To accept the jasmine flowers and glass bangles of the devotees of Tirunarayur,  Mari Amman lands here by sky route (Akasha Mari Amman) from Samayapuram.  She stays here for 13 days and returns with the offerings of the devotees.  During the festival, unmarried women, those seeking child boon and those seeking happiness in families pray to Mari Amman with bangles.  Besides Hindus, people of other religion also pray here during the festival.  The temple is in Nachiarkoil on the way to Kal Garudan Temple and the Sani Bhagwan temple near Kumbakonam.  Mother Samayapuram Mariamman graces here without a form known as Ellai Amman.

  Temple History:

There was a community here called Kavarai Chettiars.  They were bangle traders generation by generations.  Though natives of Tirunarayur, they travelled to other places too taking the bangles on horseback.  Once they came to Samayapuram and worshipped Mari Amman.  They sold the bangles there too.  They stayed there for a night.  Samayapuram Mari Amman appeared in the dream of an old trader in deep sleep as a pretty little girl and asked him to give Her bangles.  Enticed by the divine beauty of the girl, the trader began setting the bangles one by one but every piece broke.  He wondered how it could happen and was a little shocked too.  But the little girl was all smiling and looked at the face of the old man.  He was all sad that he could not give bangles to the little girl.  He thought Mother Mari Amma was testing him.  He asked the girl who she was.
She did not reply but went towards the temple.  The old man was gazing at Her.  When he checked his stock, he found them all broken.  Knowing that it was a play by Amman, he could only worship Her seeking an answer.
Other companion traders could not get up the next morning.  They had small pox on their bodies.  The old man again prayed to Amman and begged Her pardon if they committed anything wrong.  The priest of the temple came to the bangle trader holding the Aarati plate with sacred ash and kumkum.
The priest said that Amman had told him what happened the previous night and had directed him to pay the trader the gold coins at her feet to cover the price of the bangles broken by her the previous night.  Adding, the priest said that Amman had left Her effect on other traders with small pox which would immediately disappear, when the priest put on the kumkum and sacred ash Prasad on them.  To their surprise, all traders woke up with fresh health.
The traders had a bath in the river nearby and proceeded to pray to Amman.  Samayapuram Mother appeared on the sky and granted darshan and blessed them.
Samayapuram Mariamman – popularly worshipped as Samayapurathal is formless in this place and blesses the people as Ellai Amman – Goddess of the border.
