 Temple's Speciality:
     
  Mother Kathyayini Amman appears in sitting posture, Her left leg folded, placed on the right hanging and touching the ground. She is holding a parrot in the right hand a Lotus on the left facing north. Behind the Amman is a five hooded snake serving as an umbrella.

 General Information:
     
  There is a sacred tank before this east facing temple with a three tier Rajagopuram.
The 8 pillared Vasanth Mandap is inside the temple.  There is a shrine near the southern prakara for Madurai Veeran in a standing posture with Bommi and Vellayammal.  There are also sculptures of Vazhmuni, Semmuni, Muthumuni, Jatamuni, Palakkattu Muni, Vedamuni, Iladamuni.  There are three statues of Pachai Amman facing east in the west prakara.  Sangili Karuppan, Veeran, Madan and Nagar are in the northern prakara.  On the south side of the main entrance to Maha Mandap is Lord Vinayaka and Lord Muruga on the north.  There are many sculptures on the southern and northern entrances as Pachai Amman, Poongurathi Amman and Kathayi Amman with a child.  Procession deity Kathayi and Pachai Vazhi Amman are in southern side of Artha Mandap.  Besides the seven Munis in the temple, other deities as Kanjamalai Easwarar, Madurai Veeran, Katteri Karuppan are added later in the temple.

 Greatness Of Temple:
     
  Mother Kathyayini Amman appears in the sanctum sanctorum in a sitting posture with Her left leg on the right hanging and touching the ground.  She is holding a parrot in the right hand and a lotus in the left.  Valmuni also called Vazhmuni in the temple is taller than other Munis.  Other Munis – Semmuni, Muthumuni, Iladamuni, Palakkattu Muni, Sanyasi Muni are in sitting posture with right leg folded and hanging and left on the right.  Jatamuni is in sitting posture with both legs folded as Aiyappa.   Kanjamalai Easwarar is in a separate shrine with Nandhi and Balipeeta before Him.  It was a jungle region earlier.  
It was the belief of the people and also true in this holy Hindusthan-India that there was and also is divinity in some corners, a stone, a plant or a tree in these places of solitudes.   Such stone or tree homes of Gods and Goddesses are called Kudi-dwelling place of Gods.  Marathur is one such place in Thanjavur district.  The temple was built with stones about 40 years ago.
  
     
  Temple History:
     
  Pachai Amman is but Mother Parvathi.  Kathayee by Her side is but Valli consort of Lord Muruga.  As She watched – Katha in Tamil - the Thinai crops, she is praised as Katha Aayi-Kathayee.  The Munis in the temples are the sons of Nambirajan who brought up Valli-now Kathayee.  Valmuni, being the youngest of other Munis killed  8 malefic deities who came to this place to disturb the penance of Mother Parvathi.  He gave the heads of these deities to his six elder Munis, one each and kept two for himself.  Elder Munis are keeping these heads under their right leg.  The youngest Muni is keeping one head under his leg and one under his right hand, according to a story from the pujaris of the temple.
Parvathi was born the daughter of Sage Kathyayana, hence praised as Kathyayini.  She is the deity praised as Kathayee by villagers  According to experts in sculpture art, Kathayee is the deity with Lord Muruga on Her lap praised as Guhambica.  Explaining further, Kathayee is one who protects humanity as a child on her lap.  The Tamil word Katha means protecting others.  So According to Tamil Pandits, the name Kathyayini comes from Kathai Nee – You protected us.
Kathyayini Amman has different adjectives in different temples with different postures too.  She is called Nalla Kathayee-Good Kathayee and Chithadi Kathayee.  Despite varied stories, Kathyayini – Parvathi is the Mother of the Universe taking care of us and every story in every place is spun on this faith.
