Temple History: | |
Maharsi Rishya Shrunga was the presiding priest in the conduct of the Puthrakameshti Yajna performed by Emperor Dasatha seeking child boon. Son of Maharshi Vipandaka, Rishya Shringa had a stone plate which he was worshipping as Ambica. It is said that stone plate had come to this place. Based on this story, the antiquity of the temple goes back to a millennium. This plate is installed later with an Ambica idol. When Sri Adi Sankara was travelling to Kancheepuram, Ambica guided the route to him, it is believed. There is an idol of Maharshi Rishya Shringa in the temple. Mother Selva Lalithambika is personified in this plate. There was a time, which is followed even now in the form of Yantras, when powerful mantras were inscribed on them and worshipped as God or Goddess. This stone plate is four feet tall. With 12 squares containing letters of the Beejakshara Mantras (beej in Sanskrit means seed, Akshara means letters) of Parashakti. There is a trident at the central point. While Sun occupies the right top of the plate, Moon is at the left. Combining the features of Mothers Durga, Lakshmi and Sarasathi, the presiding deity-Selva Lalithambia- is beautifully painted in the plate. With due regard to tradition, a three feet Ambica idol is installed below the stone plate.
