 General Information:

The temple is 400 feet above sea level on a hill.  There are 496 steps to reach the temple.  It has mentions in the 10th and 12th century records it is said.  The whole hill temple is built with stone comprising a Rajagopuram, Deepasthambam, flag post,, front Mandap, prakara, sanctum sanctorum for the presiding deity and is under the control of the Hindu Religious and Charities department.  Lord Vinayaka has His place between two trees Arasu and Vembu before Rajagopura Mandap and Deepa Stamba.  There are also shrines in the space for Lord Kailasanathar-Mother Gnanambika; Deepasthamba; Kannimoola Ganapathi, Dandapani, flag post and Balipeeta.  Sumookar and Sudhekar are Dwarapalakas.   There also 8 Shakti shrines – Ashta Durgas, Aalambadi Vana Sakshi (Kattammai), Pappini Angala Prameswari, Kangeyam Ayee Amman, Valuppuramman, Thangamman, Andhanuramman, Karia Kali Amman and Selvanayaki Amman.

The 18th step to the hill is called Sathya Padi where cases between two litigants were tried and settled in the past.  Padi means step.  This is also called Purana Padi.  It is believed that Sadaichi Amman is residing on this step to watch the trials and justice rendered.   An Artha-Meru-a Yantra is also installed here with the footsteps of Mother Valli Amman.

It is believed that the very climbing on the steps is penance by itself.  Navagrahas are installed in the Shrine of Lord Subramania as per Agama rules.  Sani Bagwan is facing east in this temple.  Planets are placed in serial order – Sun, Moon, Mars, Jupiter and Venus.  The significance is that Saturn and Mars are together unlike in other temples.  It is believed that worshipping the Navagrahas-9planets in this single temple is equal to worshipping them in some temples especially attributed to them.

Prayers

Devotees seek from Lord Subramania boons for wedding, for a child, progress in business, relief from diseases etc. and they do get the response for their prayers.  Circumambulating the Navagra shrine 9 times promises solution to all the problems of the devotee.  Sani Bagwan has his own shrine separately.

Thanks giving:

Lord Jura Hareswarar with Suraloka Nayaki on the hill offers total cure for prolonged fevers. Affected ones come here, prepare Pepper Rasam, offer it as nivedhana to Lord and consume it then for total cure.

 Greatness Of Temple:

A devotee of Lord had learnt that there are seven springs – Hanuma Theertham, Agasthya Theertham, Indira  Theertham, Mangala Theertham, Veera Theertham, Shakthi Theertham and Brahmmananda Theertham and also the glory of Ganga.  She sought the permission of Lord Muruga.  It is believed hat Lord Muruga showed her Kasi (now Varanasi) and the Ganga, creating them here itself.  It is noteworthy that the Kasi Ganga theertha exists in the Nandavanam-garden, part of this hill.  It is also believed that Lord Vinayaka, though elder worships Lord Muruga in this hill.  The first Puja is offered to Lord Muruga only against the general principle of dedicating it to Lord Vinayaka in our temples.  Lord Muruga is also praised as Annadhana Murthy and Valli Manalan.

Valli performed penance in this hill to get Lord Muruga, established charity halls known as Valli Arachalai.  The place is now Valliarachalai.  The glory of the hill is that the herbal plants and air on the way to the hill cures many prolonged diseases. People believe that there are still Siddhas living in the hills though they are not visible.

There is a box in the temple known as Andavar Utharavu Petti – box containing the directions of Lord and the action people have to take.  He also gives the reasons – Karanam in Tamil, hence He is praised as Karana Murthy.  Such instructions are given to the devotees in their dreams.  Before placing them in the Utharavu Petti, they seek the permission from the priest through some fruit or flower.  When they placed a gun, Chinese war took place, electric motors reduced the use of ropes for drawing water from the well brought tsunami, turmeric, gold, sand, mud caused hike in the prices of these commodities and real estate values.  Something good or bad occurs from the articles placed in the Utharavu petti.

  Temple History:

Sivan Malai temple on the hill in the Kongu region in Tamilnadu is an important and famous temple and praised in the hymns of Saint Arunagiri Nathar.   It also has a place in the ancient literatures such as Sivan Malai Kuravanji.  Of the 24 member states in the ancient Kongu region, Sivan Malai was the capital of Kangeyam.  The name derives from the fact that Lord Muruga is praised as Kangeyan-Son of Mother Ganga.  The other reason is that it was ruled by a community called Kangar.  This is a very ancient place.  There are still many temples in the Kangeyam region.  This was both a forest and hill.  There are 13 epigraphic evidences, musical pillars, rare sculptures etc. speak the glory of Sivan Malai.
The name Pattaliyur in the scriptures is derived from the wedding of Lord Muruga with Valli.  There were opponents.  They were killed by Muruga.  After the marriage, they were restored back to life.  They raised a happy and celebration noise known as Pattali, hence the name Pattaliyur.
There are numerous historical documents about the place Sivan Malai undertaken by the Government researches in the year 1920.
There are thousands of mentions in our earlier literatures about the spiritual and political glory and importance of Sivan Malai.
It is noteworthy that valuable gem stones are available in this region.  They are polished and exported.  These stones were exported to Rome in ancient days according to Pathitru Pathu, an ancient Tamil Literature dating back to 2000 years.
There are 17 epigraphic notes in the pillars of Paal Venneswarar temple, another name attributed to this temple.  Historically, the temple is not only a centre of spirituality and also a centre - University about the glory of this region in trade and commerce too
