The 12^th century temple built by Chola kings is in a dilapidated condition. Lord Chidambareswarar is now placed under a roofed shed.

Traders pray to Lord and Mother for improvement and profit in their occupations and for solutions to various problems in life and business.

Renovation is underway in the temple.  Contributions are solicited from traders, well-to-do and the public to continue and complete the renovation and restore the glory of this ancient temple.

In days of yore, there lived a trader here buying horses from Poompuhar and selling in this place.  At one stage, he relinquished his passion for money and began spending his life in the service of Lord Chidambareswara.  He stayed in the temple itself.  One rainy day some traders came to this place with pepper bags and had to stay in Keezhiruppu.  The local man asked them to give some pepper to prepare Prasad for Lord.  The traders had no mind to help preparing the Prasad and said they had brought only mustard and not pepper.  Next day, when they opened the bags, they found only mustard and not pepper.  They fell at the feet of the temple man and sought his pardon for their sin.  The temple man advised them to seek the pardon from Lord.  With the grace of Lord Chidambareswarar, their bags were full of pepper again.  The old horse trader began to be praised as Milagu (pepper) Chitthar.
