 General Information:

There is evidence in the epigraphic inscriptions that the kings of Mysore regularly visited this temple, they liberally donated lands for the daily pujas, auspicious temple music and dancers.  They also arranged necessary income for the temple employees.  It is believed that this temple and that in Palni belong to the same year and age.  Both Murugas are identical in form.  The only difference is that Muruga in Palni is facing west and Muruga in Madappur is facing east.  The spring, Lord Pada Vinayaka and the steps are identical in both temples confirming the contemporary age.

There are separate shrines for Lord Madhimaleeswarar, Maragadambikai and Lord Muruga with Vimanas-a small tower above the shrine, all on a big rock.  There are Mandaps with aesthetic beauty.  Fish Symbols in the temple show, it is likely that renovations could have been taken up by Pandya kings.  The recent consecration had been celebrated without damaging old traditions.  There are shrines for Sun God,Lords Kannimoola Ganapathi, Dakshinamurthy, Chandikeswara, Kala Bhairava, Mother Durga, Saneeswara, and Navagrahas the nine planets.

Prayers

Undertaking Sashti fasting is a prayer followed by all devotees here for wedding, child boons and relief from various problems they face in life.  They surrender to Mother Ambika for quiet and happy life.  Probably, they have realized that no special commitment is necessary than surrender.

 Greatness Of Temple:

There is a sweet spring in the south side of the temple, said to have been created by Mother Ambika for Son Muruga.  The other version is that it was created by Lord Muruga Himself for His Mother.  The spring is flowing through the rocks and is ever perennial.  The shrines for Lord Madhimaleeswarar and Mother Maragambikai are on the southern side.  In the next shrine, Lord Muruga appears with His staff praised as Muthukumaraswami in standing form.  The devotional lines of Saint Arunagiriar come to our memory while seeing the handsomeness of Muruga.  There are 40 steps to reach the temple, starting with the shrine of Lord Padha Vinayaka.  The Deepasthamba – Light Post – is outside the temple according to the Kongu region tradition.  The Maha Deep is lit here during the Karthikai festival.

  Temple History:

Madappur Lord Muthukumaraswami hill temple is an exceptional one with additional glory having shrines for Lord Shiva and Mother Ambika.  The ancient temple bears testimony for temple architecture of Tamilnadu by its aesthetic beauty.  It is situated on the NH67 highway running between Palladam and Kangeyam.  According to Sthala Purana – local history – this is the temple in Madappur from where Lord Shiva and Mother Ambika called Muruga about his whereabouts after leaving them due to the mango fruit dispute.  Lord Muruga answered from Palani,  As the Son appeared before the Mother – Maadha in Tamil and in Sanskrit – the place –Oor – is called Madhapur – Madappur now.

History goes further.  That was the age of Tippu Sultan rule.  While he was travelling from Palakkadu to Mysore, suddenly, his men disappeared.  He could not find them.  He stood on the Swayambu Muruga to find his troops.  Angry Muruga took away his eye sight.  Tippu realized that he had committed wrong against God and begged His pardon.  Lord Muruga granted him his vision back.  As promised, Tippu built this temple for Lord Muruga with shrines for His parents Lord Shiva and Mother Ambika also.

Special Features:

Miracle Based: It is noteworthy that Lord Muruga in Palani and in Madappur temple look identical in both places. The significance is that Muruga – Lord Muthukumaraswami appears in this temple with His divine parents.
