 General Information:

The main livelihood of the people in this place was agriculture.  The place is on the bank of a canal adjacent to the farmlands.  The idol of Amman bears testimony to the skill of sculptors of the region especially in making God idols with all beauty.  The temple is on the Coimbatore-Sathyamangalam road.   To assess the antiquity of the idol, the Government of Tamilnadu brought experts in sculpture art and found the idol 400 years old.  The temple was in the border area in the past, but presently due to extensions, it is in the centre of the village.  Though the palaces and other royal buildings built by kings had disappeared due to decay and dilapidation  the temples they built still exist majestically.

There are shrines for Karuppanasami as a custodian deity with horses, Mother Durga and Lords Dakshinamurthy, Vinayaka and Muruga with His consorts Valli and Deivanai.  There is a trident before the presiding deity adored with 108 bells and a swing.  There is a well – theertha kinaru in Tamil – also in the temple.

A farmer in Mysore lost all the jewels and money he made by his hard labour of many years.  He was completely upset and could not recover from the sorrow and huge loss caused to him by the theft.  Meantime, they had to visit Coimbatore on some engagements.  On the way, he stopped his car and found a huge crowd before this temple.  It was a Friday.  For mental peace, he went into the temple and prayed to Amman for the recovery of stolen jewels and cash.  Surprisingly, they got the message from the Mysore police that his cash and jewels had been recovered from robbers.  The farmer returned to the temple the next Friday itself, worshipped Amman with all gratitude and executed his prayer commitment.

In another incident, a builder met with an accident, sustained severe injuries while driving.  The shocked wife prayed to Amman to protect her from any possible danger of losing her Mangal Sutra.  She prayed in the temple while proceeding to the hospital in the ambulance. The husband recovered from the shock and saw his wife.  The doctors declared him out of danger and the couple returned to their place safely within three days with the blessings of Mother Amman.  They are visiting the temple regularly even today.

 Greatness Of Temple:

This is a temple where Badrakali Amman blesses Her devotees as Samhara Murthy – destroyer of evils.  She appears in a sitting form with Her folded left leg on a peeta and the right pressed on the head of demon Mahishasura.   She is Ashtabuja Devi holding various weapons in all the eight hands.  Two demons are on both sides of this two-lotus peeta.  In early days, people would not wear sandals while passing through the temple.  Those going by vehicles, stop them near the temple and pass with foot only. She is the family deity of many in this place.  Though Kali is known for Her furious nature, Mother Badrakali Amman is all kind to her devotees.  People here begin any auspicious function in their families only after getting the approval from Amman.  Though animal sacrifices are offered in all Kali temples as a tradition, since the very beginning, this practice is not allowed in this temple.

  Temple History:

It may be recalled that ancient Tamil people classified lands into five categories as Kurinji, Mullai, Marudham Palai and Neidhal and decided the Gods and Goddesses for the respective part of the land based on their geographical classifications.  Mother Kali belongs to Palai Land then known as Goddess Kottravai.  The details are available in our Sangam literatures.

About a century back, there lived in this place two rich farmers, Semmanda Gounder and Poomanda Gounder.  The place then came to be called as Semmanan Patti.  Due to changes in the pronunciation, the name changed as Saravanampatti.  Saravanan is the name of Lord Muruga whose temple is nearby the in the Ratnagiri hill.  Mother Parvathi incarnated in many forms to destroy evils.  Mother Parvathi is gracing the people of the place as Badrakali. She has destroyed may dreaded demons as Mahishasura, Shumba, Nishumba, Dhoomralochana, Rakthabeeja and others.
