The Prime deity here is in sitting posture and appears as in wedding. He is also called “Kalyaana Maadhavan”. The Prime deity’s vimanam is known as “Aananda Nilai”. Sage Veda Vyaasa asked sage Naaradaa, which is the sinless place on the earth, and the latter showed this place. In this holy place, Maadhavapperumal is seated and appears in wedding apparels. Amirthavalli Thaayaar is on the right side of the Lord in a separate sanctum. This Divine Lady was born as a baby in the pushkarini here on a Maasi Magham day. Hence, the pushkarini is called “Santhaana Pushkarini”. It is believed that on the day she was born all the sacred waters united here. Based on this a festival is conducted on the Maasi Magham day. On that day alone, Thaayaar along with the Lord comes to the theertha kulam and graces us. The belief is that by taking bath at the theertham and worshipping Thaayaar, all our sins will be assuaged and we will be blessed. Those who suffer hurdles in getting married worship Her by offering a mixture of milk, sugar-candy and saffron. Such an offering would bless them with offsprings is the belief. Utsavar appears with a pretty face like the lotus flower – hence He is “Aravinda Maadhavan”, ‘aravindam’ meaning ‘lotus flower’. He goes in procession on the Sadayam star day.
Sampathkumaarar: Sri Ramanuja who journeyed to all the Vishnu temples, went to Tirunarayanapuram at Karnataka. There the Utsavar Sampathkumaarar could not be seen. The woe-stricken Ramanujar understood that the king who ruled Delhi had taken away the icon as per his daughter’s desire. He went to Delhi and prayed to Lord Vishnu. At that instant, the icon at the king’s palace came and settled on his lap. Ramanujar brought this icon back to Tirunarayanapuram, installed it there and worshipped.
This Sampathkumaarar remains as Utsavar here. Near His feet is Bibi Naachiyaar, the daughter of the Delhi king. The belief is that by praying to this Lord the family will become affluent. Hence, He is also named ‘Selvapillai’. During Panguni a festival for 10 days is performed for Sampathkumaarar. The celebration of the Lord sitting on the lap of Ramanujar is a famous festivity.
Birth place of Peyaalvaar: One of the first three Aalvaars (mutalaalvaar) Peyaalvaar was born in a red lily flower in the Manikairavam Well, situated at a distance from this place. The Aalvaar has a separate sanctum in this temple. 10 days’ festival is conducted close to Aippasi Sadayam day. At Tirukkovilur Lord Vishnu made the three Aalvaars – Poigai, Putam and Peyaalvar – come together and Himself revealed to them. Based on this, during the festival the ‘Tirukkoilur vaibhavam’ when the three Aalvaars appear together and on the tenth day the celebration of the Aalvaar visiting his birthplace, the Well are performed. In this holy place, Tirumalisai Aalvaar as a disciple to Peyaalvaar had his spiritual teachings from him. This episode is celebrated on the fourth day of the festival. On the pillars of the mandapam in front of the sanctum of Thaayaar, images of Peyaalvaar on the carriers such as parrot, elephant, horse and on sun-disc are sculpted. |

Temple History: | |
Sage Bhrigu to test Lord Vishnu’s composure kicked the Lord on His chest. Mahalakshmi, angered by this, left the Lord. In order to find out a solution for this grave mistake, Sage Bhrigu did tapasya praying to have Mahalakshmi as his daughter. Mahalakshmi manifested as a kid in the theertham here. Since Lakshmi came out of the Milk Ocean that was churned to get ‘amutham’ (nectar), the sage named Her ‘Amirthavalli’ and brought her up. When she attained marriageable age, he requested Lord Vishnu to marry her. The Lord came here and married her and the Divine couple stayed here as requested by sage Bhrigu. |
