 Greatness Of Temple:

Fire accidents took place often in this area when the temple was built.  People believed that the cause of fire may be due to the fury-fire element in the idol of Kannagi.  King Shenbaga Pandian discussed the issue with his ministers.  It is said that Lord Shiva appeared in his dream and advised to install the idol of Mother Parvathi in the temple, according to some sources.  The king did so as advised by Lord and named Mother as Shenbagathu Amman which in later days changed as Chellathamman.  After this event, Chellathamman became prominent and popular.  First Puja is dedicated to Chellathamman and then to Kannagi.
Mother Chellathamman appears in a posture as killing a demon and holding a Kondrai flower in hand.  Pechiamman is opposite of Chellathamman.  There a separate shrine for the procession deity Chellathamman.  Kannagi is in the front mandap with Her anklet in one hand.  Women worship Kannagi with Mangal Sutra, lime fruit garland.
Those facing adverse aspects of serpent planets worship Nagaraja with milk and turmeric abishek offering garlands made of cotton with kumkum.
The wedding festival is celebrated during Thai (January-February) Brahmmotasavam when Ambica visits the Shiva shrine in Lord Meenakshi-Sundareswarar temple.  A silk sari from the Shiva shrine is gifted to Mother on the occasion with a Mangal sutra.  Mother comes in procession in the car-rath the next day wearing this silk sari.

  Temple History:

Celebrated Tamil epic Cilapathikaram elaborately explains the tragic experiences of Kanangi and Kovalan who migrated to Madurai from their native Kaviripoom Pattinam in the Chola kingdom, hoping to see a fresh lease of life and to make up their economic losses.  When Kovalan sought to sell one of Kannagi’s anklets to make capital for a trade, a goldsmith, who had earlier stolen the anklet of the Pandya queen met Kovalan and used the opportunity to make Kovalan the scape goat and got him executed by the king for theft.  As Pandya king Nedunchezhian erred in his hasty judgment without trying the case fairly, Kannagi rose in fury, appeared before the king, argued and proved beyond doubt that her husband Kovalan was innocent.  Realizing the injustice he caused to a migrant visitor, Pandya king and his queen fell dead from the throne and made amends by offering their own lives in turn.
People worshipped Kannagi as Goddess of Chastity.  They raised the temple in the place Kannagi stayed, where Jain woman monk Gavundi Adigal left them in asylum to Madari.  It became popular from the days of Shenbaga Pandian as Amman Koil.
