 General Information:

Mother Adi Shakti is the first ruler of the world.  She needed some to assist Her in the administration of the world and created Lord Brahmma and Vishnu, who worshipped Her.  She created Lord Shiva then, who unlike the earlier Lords, simply smiled at Her allured by the beauty of Her eyes.  Kamakshi means one with alluring eyes motivating desires.  Lord Shiva said that if She agrees, She would be half of His body.  Mother Shakti consented and merged with half of the body of Lord Shiva.
Lord Brahmma was the priest to conduct the wedding of Mother Meenakshi with Lord Shiva-Sundareswarar.  Lord asked Brahmma what he wanted as Dakshina-remuneration for conducting the marriage.  Proud Brahmma demanded that the Dakshina should be such that could not be controlled by Him.  Shiva laughed and said that Poverty was one not in the control of Brahmma and that would be his Dakshina.  Shocked Brahmma fell at the feet of Mother Meenakshi and sought a remedy for the strange Dakshina for his pride.  Mother said that She would be coming to Madurai as Kamakshi when he would worship Her and relieved of his poverty.

 Greatness Of Temple:

The ancient temple has two entrances at north and east. The north entrance leading to Mother’s shrine is very popular.  Dwarapalakis – women securities – appear at the shrine after passing the flag post-Kodimaram and the mandap.  At their left are Lord Ganapathy, Brahmma and Mother Saraswathi.  At the right are Lords Muruga, Vishnu, a rare opportunity for the devotees to have their darshan at the same spot.  In the next mandap are Lord Nataraja with Mother Sivakami, Banalinga with Ugra Kali – furious Kali – now softened nearby.  With Mother Gayatri with Her five faces, ten hands and three feet nearby, Lord Ekambareswara blesses the devotees facing east.

Lord Ekambareswara and Mother Kamakshi bless the devotees from this temple.  It is believed that Mother in other Shiva temples also is but Mother Kamakshi Herself.  Alankaras – dressing – is very attractive in this temple.  Itcha Shakti, Gnana Shakti, Kriya Shakti , Sri Anjaneya, Lord Dakshinamurthi, Lingodhbava, Mother Durga and Chandikeswara are in the prakara.  Sri Nala Brahmma who helped Lord Sri Rama and Sri Lakshmana is in a separate shrine blessing the devotees.

  Temple History:

There was a mango grove south of the present Meenakshi temple, the home of Mother Vana Kali.  People of the Vishwakarma community were worshipping her as their Kula Devatha – community deity.  One day, the priest of the temple closed the doors of the temple leaving his son inside absent mindedly.  When his wife asked him to bring back the son, he came back to the temple to take the son.  On opening the door, he died  due to excessive fury-heat of Kali.  people decided to build a temple for Kali and dug a place in the grove.  They found a Shivalinga.  Amra in Sanskrit means mango.  As the Banalinga was found under a mango tree, He was named Ekambareswara.  Thus the temple planned for Kali was built for Lord Shiva as per Shiva Agama rules and to fulfill the promise of Mother Meenakshi to Lord Brahmma.
