 Greatness Of Temple:

Periapuranam, celebrated epic on the lives of Shiva devotees is venerated as the Bible of Saivism authored by the inspired poet Sekkizhar.  A Tamil scholar Vanthondar wanted to build a temple for Sekiizhar.  The basic philosophy of Shiva worship is service to Shiva devotees.  Vanthondar, a Shiva devotee wanted to construct a temple to another Shiva devotee Sekkizhar.  But due to circumstances, it became a Shiva temple.  Yet Sekkizhar is made the procession deity of the temple.   Also there is a big temple bell in which it is inscribed “Sekkizhar Koil Mani – Sekkizhar temple bell”.

  Temple History:

A Tamil scholar Vanthondar held Sekkizhar in high esteem who wrote the great epic on the 63 Shiva devotees named Thiruthondar Puranam or Peria Puranam.  He wanted to write a book in praise of Sekkizhar and expressed his desire to Sundaram Pillai, author of Manonmaniam.  Sundaram Pillai fulfilled the desire of Vanthondar and also decided to build a temple for Sekkizhar.  But, due to some circumstances, the details of which are not now available, the temple was built for Lord Shiva.  Lord Sundareswarar and Mother Meenakshi were installed in the sanctum sanctorum.  A separate shrine was also built for Sekkizhar.
