Temple History: | |
Some wicked sages in Tharukavanam performed a Yagna with evil mantras targeting Lord Shiva and created a tiger to kill him. Lord Shiva killed the man-eater and used its skin for his dress. The event happened in this place. The place is called by many names as Brahmmavanam, Palaivanam, Arasavanam, Punnahavanam etc. This is one of the Sapthasthanas around Tirunallur.
During the forest life of the Pandavas, as advised by Sage Dhoumya, Arjuna came to this temple, worshipped Lord Shiva and learnt all the techniques of archery. He also went down the world below the earth and married Uloopi.
Lord Sri Rama worshipped Lord Shiva here to get Himself cleansed of the sin of killing Ravana. Since his sins were cleared of, the place is known as Papanasam (Papa-sin, Nasam-cleared).
There are many Shivalingas serially installed in the Mandap with Avudayars – a platform on which Shivalingas are placed. |
